Walk Through

Important Note: This quest coincides with and requires the completion of the Lord Mhoire Quest (GY Colo).

Part 1 of this quest must be completed within 24 hours of completing the Lord Mhoire Quest.

There are two distinct parts to this quest, each with its own timer. You must complete part 1 before you can do part 2, thereafter you can do either part independently, so long as the timer is up. (Repeating Part 1 only requires talking to Lord Cynreft Mhoire again, you do not need to repeat giving the letter from Laylana). The dungeon is the same for both parts until you get to the very final room. Part 1 ends with a room with a pillar to destroy. Part 2 ends with a boss fight against the Jester.

Part 1: Releasing the Jester

  1. Speak to Laylana at 65.3S 44.3W in Graveyard. She is standing outside.
  2. Speak to the Jailer inside the bunker at 64.9S 44.1W in Graveyard.
    • The bunker is the middle one in the row of bunkers, one to the left of the bunker used for Count Phainor's Amulet. Turn right at the bottom of the first stairs in the bunker and keep going until you find the Jailer.
  3. Go north from the Jailer past the hidden wall and use the portal to Jester's Prison. You must click on the portal.
  4. At the drop room, speak to the Wall, the white dot visible on radar near the north wall. There is also a door in the room which you cannot use yet.
  5. Return to Laylana and speak to her again to get Laylana's Love Letter and the Pleading Letter. Both are needed to complete the quest.
  6. Take the Pleading Letter to Lord Cynreft. You'll need to complete another quest to get to him (Lord Mhoire Quest). He'll give you a Jester Prison Key when given the letter (be sure to also talk to him for the chest key for the other quest). The key has a timer and can be used repeatedly for 24 hours before disintegrating. Note that this is a real world timer and will count down even when you are not logged in.
  7. Return to Jester's Prison and give the key to the door to be portaled to the next section. Note that every person must have a key to get to the next section!
  8. Move through the dungeon and use switches to open doors, ignoring the lifeless guardians. Eventually, you'll come to a door with a switch in a side room that is stuck. Nearby is another wall on the radar that you can talk to.
  9. Give the wall Laylana's Love Letter, this will activate the nearby switch and also cause the guardians in the dungeon to attack you.
  10. Continue moving through the dungeon. You will encounter several rooms with switches you must pull in a progressive order. See the map for details. Each alcove room typically has 2 switches, one that opens the next alcove in the sequence, and one that reopens the door to that alcove.
  11. Eventually you will reach the trap hallway with the arcane pyramids. These pyramids are usually a quick death if you get hit. They are the same pyramids as the ones on the Empyrean Rescue Quest and Hoshino Must Die. Watch the pattern of pyramids as they come down the hall and zigzag to the safe side hallways as you move forward. Use the door in the next room to reach the final room (safe drop).
    • Note that if you die, you can easily get back by using the Jester's Prison portal again in Graveyard. Answer 'Yes' when prompted to return.
  12. Kill the pillar in the middle of the final room (Jester's Entombment Wall). The pillar can be vuln'd before attacking. When it reaches 50% health, the Jester will summmon some guardians to attack you. Once the pillar dies, the Jester will be freed and will spawn nearby.
    • If you die in the last room, you can easily get back by using the Jester's Prison portal in Graveyard and answering 'Yes'.
  13. Speak to the Jester to learn the Arcane Pyramid spell and receive an Arcane Pyramid, which when used will give you an 8 hour Dark Scarab to cast the spell. If you are not a mage, you can trade the Arcane Pyramid to the Jailer in Graveyard for 1 Ancient Mhoire Coin.
    • If you talk to the Jester again, he will portal you high above Graveyard and give you the "Jester's Fool" title. This is probably preferred, since it is the fastest method to get back to Laylana.
  14. Return to Layla and speak to her. She will bestow the title "Jester's Emancipator", experience, and luminance rewards (up to 400M XP, 10K luminance).

Part 2: Recapturing the Jester

  1. After 20 hours of having freed the Jester you can return to the Jailer to receive a new task: recapturing the Jester. The Jailer will hand you 200 Balls of Fire and a new Jester Prison Key with which to access the dungeon again.
  2. Travel through the dungeon just the same as before until you get to the Cell portal at the end.
  3. The cell portal will now teleport you to a new area. Light the Brazier (use fire attacks) to make the Jester and several guardians spawn.
  4. Kill the guardians first so that you can focus on the Jester.
  5. Battle the Jester using the Balls of Fire given to you by the Jailer. The Balls of Fire have "Touched" slayer on them, so they are generally effective on him. The Jester can be vulned. His melee defense is very high, so hitting him with melee weapons is typically not an effective strategy. The Jester will spawn on the platforms that ring around the room and he will constantly teleport from one to another. Throw the Balls of Fire at him to kill him. He casts a lot of interesting spells including: the Arcane Pyramid spell, a spell that shoots a Cow-shaped projectile, a spell that shoots a table projectile, Blood Bolt, and several volley spells with special names. The Jester will also randomly cast Adja's Gift on you during the battle.
  6. After he is defeated an NPC Jester will appear. Talk to him to receive another Arcane Pyramid, a Braced Mana Forge Key, a random card from the Deck of Eyes or Deck of Hands, experience and luminance, and the title "Jester's Accomplice." Speak to him twice for the additional title "Jester's Fool" and a free trip back to the Graveyard, similar to part 1.
  7. The Arcane Pyramid can be given to the Jailer for an Ancient Mhoire Coin if you don't want the Dark Scarab. Though the pyramids are givable (can be turned in with another character) you are limited to turning in one per 20 hour period.

Lore & Dialog

Speaking to the Jailer:

Jailer tells you, "Begone! Only Lord Cynreft may visit the prisoner."

Jailer tells you, "You have not heard of the prisoner? So powerful and so very mad. Once he entertained the court of Mhoire with his antics, but that was before the betrayal. Now he is imprisoned here for all time."

Jailer tells you, "Go now. You have no business here."

Using the Jester Prison Door:

You notice a marker on the door. "This door sealed by order of Lord Cynreft."

Speaking to the Wall:

The Jester tells you, "Please, you, yes you, the one talking to a wall."

The Jester tells you, "You must free me. I was incarcerated without due process. Their were mitigating circumstances!"
Suddenly you hear a ripple of mad laughter.
The Jester tells you, "Free me and I shall give you a boon, my most magnificent friend."
The Jester tells you, "Sorry about that sire. Sometimes the urge to laugh at my situation is too great."
The Jester tells you, "Set me free O' noble hero! I am but a lowly court Jester who ran afoul of his wish to do good. I don't claim to be innocent, but who is? In this case though the punishment does not befit the crime."
The Jester tells you, "Ok, I'm done. Please come back when you feel the need to free me."
The Jester tells you, "Shhh, I'm talking to my new friend! No, go away, I'll play with you later!"
The Jester tells you, "Sorry oh beneficent one. Where was I? Let's see, free me, imprisoned unjustly, laugh madly, offer the dolt a reward... Oh, right."

The Jester tells you, "Free me so that I may return to my love, Laylana. She knows not what has befallen me."

Speaking again:

The Jester tells you, "Oh, it's you again? Have you come to free me from the unjust oppression under which I am held? Come on, please!"

Speaking to Laylana after the wall:

Laylana tells you, "You found him? He is imprisoned? Oh, my love, what could have happened."

Laylana tells you, "Please deliver this note to Lord Cynreft and then deliver this note to my love in his prison."
Laylana gives you Pleading Letter.

Laylana gives you Laylana's Love Letter.

Turning in the Pleading Letter:

You give Lord Cynreft Mhoire Pleading Letter.

Lord Cynreft carefully reads the letter.
Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "I wish that things were different for this poor woman. But, there is no chance of the Jester's release."
Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "Long ago my house fled the vile corruption of Geraine and his court. I sought to protect my family and my people from the unnatural magics spreading through the other noble houses."
Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "We came to this small island, an ancient and little used retreat of my people. Here I hid my house from the un-death spreading through our empire. Here I hoped to plan a means of stopping Geraine and his dark reign."
Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "Then we were betrayed!"
Lord Cynreft's ephemeral form suddenly coalesces and becomes almost solid. Grief and unspeakable anger rage within his eyes. Then he sags and fades almost from view.
Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "My Court Jester, sharp of wit and nimble of foot, and lifelong friend, the last person I would expect to betray me, snuck away in the night. He met with Rytheran to bargain my house's secret location in exchange for power. I suppose he got his reward. I still don't know how that dark mage Rytheran did it, but he drove that treacherous fool mad with the power he instilled in him." Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "His mind broken, he returned to my court where he caused havoc and insanity. We finally trapped him, but the death he so richly deserved was now impossible. My most deadly spells had nearly no effect on him. He had grown so powerful he was no longer empyrean. He had become something horrible and everlasting."
Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "I ordered him entombed for all eternity. And set guardians to watch over him."
Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "I fear that I cannot grant the Maiden Laylana's request. It would be unthinkable to release him."
Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "I do feel for her loss all the same. I myself lost those closest to me following the Jester's betrayal. I will let you deliver her Love Letter to the Jester, although it will surely mean nothing to his deranged mind."
Lord Cynreft Mhoire gives you Jester Prison Key.
Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "Take this key. It will grant you limited access to the Jester. Be sure that you do not listen to his rantings. He may be insane, but he remains as clever a trickster as ever he was. Above all do not try to free him. I took great measures to insure he will never be released and you would surely die in the attempt."

Lord Cynreft Mhoire tells you, "I thank you again for your bravery in destroying my corrupted form."

If you try to use lever before handing Love Letter:

The Lever appears to be stuck.

Handing Love Letter to Wall midway through dungeon:

The Jester Says, "Hello?"
An oddly humorous voice cries out for help.
The Jester tells you, "Please, please set me free. I was only trying to help."
You give Wall Laylana's Love Letter.
A very loud whisper can be heard coming from the hole in the wall. "Thanks for the letter! Things get kind of crazy in here sometimes, but I can hold on now that I know she still loves me."
The Jester tells you, "Psst! You can go on just a bit further into the prison and help me out. It's not that dangerous really. Just a little deadly. Find my entombment wall and knock it down. That's all, just a little demolition and I'll be out of your hair. It's really not asking too much is it?"

If don't break him out, talking to Laylana:

Laylana tells you, "Thank you for delivering my letter to my love."

Laylana leans forward and gives you a ghostly kiss on the cheek.
Laylana tells you, "I only ask you this because I know my love must have had a good reason for what he did. He was loyal to Lord Cynreft, I know it."
Laylana bows her head in grief.
Laylana tells you, "Yes, I respect your decision to abide by Lord Cynreft's wishes."
Laylana tells you, "You should be rewarded for all you have done for me."

You've earned 183,173,667 experience.
(Level 196)

Note: If you wait around too long he portals you out.

Jester says, "See you soon!"

Talking while you fight the wall:

The Jester says, "I would have gotten out on my own, but Cynreft wouldn't let me bring my hammer and chisel."

The Jester says, "Hey, I'm trying to sleep! Keep it down!"
The Jester says, "My music wasn't that loud!"
The Jester says, "How many adventurers does it take to knock down a wall?"
The Jester says, "Show that wall who the wall bully is!"
The Jester says, "Go Team, Go! Knock away that stupid wall! You the best fighter or wizard or archer of them all!"
You flatten Jester's Entombment Wall's body with the force of your assault!
The wall crumbles and something flashes by you. Mad giggling fills the room.
Jester says, "Wahoo! I'm free! I'm free!"

Jester says, "Boy it feels good to stretch my legs!"

Speaking to the Jester after breaking the wall:

Jester tells you, "Thanks friend! You really did me a favor. Hmmm, what could I do for you. Hey did you ever wonder what it would be like to have six arms? Tentacles? Feelers?"

Jester tells you, "Eh, too much trouble. Here take this Pal."

Jester gives you Arcane Pyramid.

Speaking to the Jester after getting the Arcane Pyramid:

The Jester waggles his finger in your face.

Jester tells you, "Naughty naughty! You tried to trick your old pal the Jester! I already gave you a present! You need to learn a lesson little one."
Jester tells you, "This will hurt you more than it hurts me."

The Jester halls back and punches you in the head. Leaving the Title, "Jester's Fool", stamped there.

Speaking to Laylana after freeing the Jester:

Laylana tells you, "My love is free! You have set my soul to rest my dear. May others know you as I do, the "Jester's Emancipator.""

You've earned 198,157,237 experience.
Laylana sighs in relief.

Laylana tells you, "My love can prove his innocence now. We shall be together again someday. Thank you for your help dear."

Failing to "Defeat" the Jester:

Electricity from Guardian Statue's attack tears you apart!

Jester tells you, "Look at the little apple falling from the tree of life. The delicious juicy apple..."
Jester tells you, "Hey, where'd you go?"
Jester tells you, "Hurray! Your my hundredth kill! You get a prize!"
Jester tells you, "If only you were still here to collect it..."
Jester tells you, "Oh well, I'll give it to someone else."

Jester tells you, "Are you faking? Your faking right?"
Jester tells you, "Oh, I guess not."
Jester tells you, "Ummm... I kinda burnt your corpse a bit."

Jester tells you, "Ewwww! Stop being so dead all over the place! Nasty!"

After "Defeating" the Jester:

The Jester makes a dramatic fall clutching his chest and vanishes.

Jester says, "Enough games for the moment."
Jester gives you Arcane Pyramid.
You've earned 100,000,000 experience.
The Jester stares you in the eye. A horrendous understanding begins to bloom within your mind. Just as you feel your last grip on sanity coming loose the Jester giggles and looks away.
Jester tells you, "I found this key and the voices told me I should give it to you."
Jester gives you Braced Mana Forge Key.
Jester gives you Eight of Hands.

Jester tells you, "Thanks for amusing me for awhile! Better luck next time with the whole imprisoning me for eternity thing!"

Message from the Jailer 20 Hours after "Defeating" the Jester":

Jailer tells you, "You try my patience outsider! Haven't you captured the Jester yet?"

Jailer tells you, "Have you mislaid the key I gave you?"
Jailer tells you, "No matter. Take this one and capture the fool."
You hand over all of your Jester Prison Keys.
You hand over all of your Balls of Fire.
Jailer gives you Jester Prison Key.

Jailer gives you 200 Balls of Fire.
