Their motivation was more due to cultural elitism (they wanted to throw off anything that smacked of the British) and less due to their desire to make an inherently better system of measurement. Remember: If the Metric System is so great, why isn't Europe using a 10-"hour" clock? (Note: Someone actually developed this as well, although it never caught on. Swatch is trying to bring it back after a fashion with their "Swatch Internet Time".)
