Grutts are descended from Dereth pigs, twisted into their current, semi-intelligent forms by the Devastation (which also created the Nemeses and such other races as the Sclavus, Mimbu, and Darkenfowl).
 
Grutts are insatiable, omnivorous scavengers who tend to live in filthy, squalid conditions. They are often associated with piles of trash, and base their internal rankings on the size and "quality" of the trash heap they own. While they are physically capable of wielding weapons and tools, the first thought that enters the average Grutt's mind upon picking up an object is, "Is this good to eat?" Grutts compete with Vermin for many of the same food sources, and while the Grutts are stronger, the Vermin have greater numbers.
 
The wise adventurer attacks them from some distance—Grutts are well known for harboring diseases with effects that range from reeking breath to festering boils.
